Built to Operate (“BTO,” “we,” “us”) is an independent research and advisory platform exploring how AI reshapes organizations, labor markets, and emerging economies. This policy covers the information we collect through our website, our published frameworks and tools, and our advisory and training services.

2. Information we collect

Information you give us directly

• Your name and email address, when you sign up for a free framework, our newsletter, or contact us directly.
• Purchase information, when you buy a tool, guide, or report. Payment card details are collected and processed by our payment processor, Gumroad; we do not see or store your full card number.
• The content of any message you send us, including through a contact form, email, or a booked advisory call.
• Information you share with us as part of a scoped advisory or training engagement, which is governed by that engagement’s own agreement in addition to this policy.

Information collected automatically

• Standard technical data: your browser type, device type, general location inferred from your IP address, and the pages you visit on our site.
• Usage data collected through analytics tools, so we can understand which frameworks and pages are actually useful. See Cookies & analytics below.

Information from third parties

When you purchase a product through Gumroad, Gumroad shares your order details (name, email, product purchased) with us so we can fulfill the order and provide support.

3. How we use your information

• To deliver the framework, tool, guide, or report you requested or purchased.
• To respond to questions, scope an advisory or training engagement, and provide support.
• To send you the newsletter or updates you’ve opted into, and nothing else, unless you separately agree to it.
• To understand how the site and our instruments are actually used, so we can improve them.
• To meet legal, tax, and accounting obligations.

We do not sell your personal information, and we don’t use it to serve you third-party advertising.

4. Cookies & analytics

Like most websites, we use cookies and similar technologies for basic site function and to understand traffic. This may include an analytics service such as Google Analytics, which collects aggregate, non-identifying information about how visitors use the site.

You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings. Doing so may affect how parts of the site work, but it won’t prevent you from reading the free frameworks.

5. How we share information

We share information only with the service providers that help us run the business, and only as much as each one needs to do its job:

• Gumroad, to process payments and deliver digital products.
• Email delivery and newsletter providers, to send the updates you’ve opted into.
• Hosting and analytics providers, to keep the site running and understand how it’s used.

We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect our rights, or as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of business assets, in which case this policy would carry over to the new owner.

6. Data retention

We keep personal information for as long as we need it to provide our products and services, maintain business records, and meet legal or tax obligations, and then delete or anonymize it. If you ask us to delete your data sooner, see Your rights & choices below.

7. Your rights & choices

• You can unsubscribe from any email at any time using the link at the bottom of the message.
• You can ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, by emailing us.
• If you’re located in the EU, UK, or a US state with its own privacy law (such as California), you may have additional rights under those laws, and we’ll honor requests made under them.

8. Children’s privacy

Our site and services are built for working professionals and organizations, not children. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we’ll remove it.

9. International users

Our site is operated from the United States, and information we collect may be stored and processed in the United States or by service providers located elsewhere. By using the site, you understand your information may be transferred outside your home country.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as our products, tools, or legal obligations change. If we make a material change, we’ll update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use the site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
